Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) George MacDonald was born in Hocking, Iowa, and earned a mechanical engineering degree from the Detroit Institute of Technology. He attended Citizens' Military Training Camps at Camp Custer, Michigan, and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Infantry Reserve on 21 October 1933.
